CALABAR—THE deadline of June 20, 2017 for television stations to switch over from analogue broadcasting with the use of transmitters to digital broadcast will be met, even if all the states do not migrate on that date.
Director General, National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Ishag Kawu, who gave the assurance in Calabar, Cross Rivers State, yesterday, during the visit of the House of Representatives Committee on Digital Broadcast to Gosspell Digital Technologies, one of the manufacturers of digital setup boxes, stated that the switch over process will continue after the benchmark date because digital switch over is a marathon and not a sprint which can be completed within a short time.
He said: “Nigeria is a very large country and a digital switch over is a technical challenge, a logistic challenge and financial challenge and when you put all of these together, you will notice that we are putting in place a process that will change the face of television broadcasting for ever in the country. So, we must take our time to ensure that we meet our obligation to the International Telecommunication Union by switching over.”
Modibo stated that the digital switch over will greatly improve the quality of television signals and the number of channels in each state while opportunities will increase for young people to produce content and also market services that will keep television stations on air all day long.
“In the past in Jos, Plateau State, you could only watch NTA and PRTV but now you can watch 15 free channels and the switch over in Abuja with the use of digital setup boxes which are being manufactured by Gospell Technologies and 13 other companies, over 30 channels can be watched.
“With this, we envisage that there is a lot that will come eventually,” he added.
which will open opportunities for a lot of young people to do content and other services for television stations.”
