The Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, has called on women to speak with one voice to stop all forms of discrimination, domestic violence and gender inequality against women.
Adebule, who joined women and the rest of the world to mark the 2017 International Women’s Day celebration, explained that the annual celebration by the United Nations was in recognition of the important roles that women had been playing in the political, social and economic development of the society.
The deputy governor, who described the theme for the 2017 International Women’s Day celebration, ‘Be Bold for Change,’ as relevant, stated that it was a clarion call for women to take pragmatic steps to fight discrimination that had been hindering women development.
She said, “We all must work in synergy to ensure all girls have access to free, equitable and quality education. Our unity of purpose must be to help all women to end all forms of discrimination.”
Adebule stated that Lagos had inaugurated the Domestic and Sexual Violent Response Team (DSVRT), to protect women and the girl-child from violence and abuses by prosecuting any offender of the act.
The wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, said more women needed to come out of their shell and refuse to be limited in their vision.
“We must embrace change with boldness and open a new door of opportunities for ourselves,” she said.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Lola Akande, enjoined women to see themselves as potential leaders and be committed to pragmatic actions to foster women emancipation.
