The Lagos State Government says the Internet and social media are killing productivity in the civil service.
The Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr Benson Oke, stated this at a two-day workshop titled, ‘Work Ethics and Attitudinal Change for Improved Productivity,’ organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Establishments, Training and Pensions in Ikeja.
The commissioner said the Internet and social media had been impeding productivity in workplaces.
“Given the ubiquity of these otherwise helpful and extraordinarily useful platforms, many people unknowingly waste their time in chats that are not productive under the guise of keeping abreast of news and happenings around them.
“Instead of these platforms assisting individuals to make better decisions through access to knowledge that they offered, many utilise these platforms to catch up with gossip,” he said.
Oke said the time had come for civil servants to be very productive even with the availability of Internet, adding that such would be beneficial to the state and the residents.
He urged the state workforce to support the efforts to ensure that every officer in the Lagos State Civil Service adopted the positive attitude and beneficial work ethics that were required to achieve the objective of moving Lagos State forward.
