A devastating rainstorm has claimed the life of a four year old pupil of Wisdom International School, Maria Ibzi from Iddo in Okpella, Etsako, Edo State, while several others were injured in the disaster.

This is as the House of Representatives in a resolution mandated its Committee on National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA to visit the family of the deceased and those injured as well as the palace of the paramount ruler of Okpella Kingdom, His Royal Highness, Alhaji A.Y.E Dirisu, the Okokpellagbe of Okpella. The resolution was sequel to a motion sponsored by Rep Johnson Oghuma representing Etsako Federal Constituency of Edo State entitled, “Rainstorm disaster in Okpella, Etsako Federal Constituency.”

Oghuma told Saturday Vanguard that one of the victims of the rainstorm disaster and brother to the deceased was taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention, adding that three communities were sacked as a result of the havoc.

The lawmaker further stated that the rain storm blew off a four classroom block at the Iddo Community Grammar School and also damaged the Water Borehole in the area put in place by the European Union, EU, thereby making it impossible for the people to have a good drinking water.

In the motion in the House of Representatives, Oghuma expressed concern at “the devastating rainstorm that took place in several communities in Okpella on 6 March, 2017, leading to the death of one student and his brother sustaining severe injuries.

“The disaster also affected a Community Secondary School in lddo while students were studying, destroyed two blocks of classrooms, pulled down electric poles and damaged over 100 houses in different communities in Okpella kingdom.

“The rainstorm, which came with the first rain of the season, has rendered hundreds of people homeless and in need of assistance as more rains are being expected with likelihood of more rainstorms.”

The House presided over by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara called “on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to, as a matter of urgency, send relief materials to the victims of the devastating rainstorm to reduce their sufferings”.
