Police closed and sealed off the London Bridge station, the fourth busiest in the British capital, due to a security alert on Tuesday.

Police said no trains were stopping at the station and some surrounding buildings were evacuated as specialist bomb squad officers were called to the scene.

An evacuation of London Bridge Underground station caused travel chaos for commuters after a fire alarm was activated during rush-hour.

Thousands of commuters faced long delays getting home after the station was shut because of a fire alert.

The Underground at London Bridge was closed at 17.47 p.m. after an alarm was set off.

A spokesman for Transport for London spokesman told the Sun Online they were confident there had not been a fire

but instead an alarm was set off because of a “faulty fire panel”.

London Bridge is a central London railway terminus and connected Underground station in Southwark, occupying a large area on three levels immediately south-east of London Bridge and 1.6 miles (2.6 km) east of Charing Cross.

The main line station is the oldest railway station in London fare zone 1 and one of the oldest in the world having opened in 1836.

It is one of two main line termini in London to the south of the River Thames, the other being Waterloo.

In terms of passenger arrivals and departures it is the fourth-busiest station in London as well as the United Kingdom as a whole, handling over 54 million customers a year.

These statistics do not include the many commuters who transfer between lines at the station.
