Ebonyi State Police Command on Friday exhumed the corpse of a woman identified as Mrs. Catherine Okorie Chukwu, 59, for an autopsy.
Chukwu was allegedly kidnapped and killed by a gang of six kidnappers.
The deceased, according to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Jude Madu, hailed from Amanonye Ishiagu community, Ivo Local Government Area of the state.
She was kidnapped on January 18, 2017.
The PPRO disclosed that three suspects had been arrested in connection with the crime.
Madu said the suspects arrested included Ogbudule Chukwu Matthew, a native of Lokpanta Isuochi Umunochi Local Government Area of Abia State, and 28-year-old Ezenwa Egeonu, in addition to a female friend of one of the suspects.
He said, “A team of Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad has visited the scene of the burial and exhumed the corpse of the woman. The suspect led the police to the burial scene where the corpse was buried in a shallow grave. The exhumation was carried out by pathologists from the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, in addition to a team of morticians.
“Police have evacuated the decomposing corpse of the woman and has taken it for an autopsy to unravel the cause of death, while the command awaits the result of the autopsy for further action.
“On the day the kidnapping took place, the deceased’s relatives reported to the police, and the police went after the suspects, combing a vast area of the thick forest in Lokpanta community with tracking devices..
