The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has said one million women and girls become infected with HIV annually, stressing that there was an urgent need to boost HIV prevention and treatment servicies.
In a report, ‘When women lead, change happens’ released to mark the International Women’s Day, the UNAIDS also said 470,000 women and girls die of AIDS-related illnesses.
“Women are leading change in increasing demand for and access to HIV and health services. This movement needs to grow to allow families to thrive, societies to flourish and economies to progress,” the Executive Director of UNAIDS, Michel Sidibé, was quoted as saying in a statement by UNAIDS.
“Women’s rights are human rights—no exceptions.”
