The President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Mr. Michael Alogba-Olukoya, has said that the Trade Union Congress is backing some teachers to break away from the NUT to the Academic Staff Union of Secondary School.
Alogba-Olukoya said this in an interview with our correspondent in Osogbo on Thursday on the sidelines of his visit to Osun State on Thursday.
The NUT president said the ASUSS was not a recognised organisation, describing it as an illegal body.
He said, “Some powerful opposition groups to the size of the NUT are the ones behind the scene sponsoring the splinter group. But thank God the case is not like that in Osun State.
“Some powerful groups within the TUC are creating problems. Why should the TUC incorporate them to be existing as a union when they are not registered with the Ministry of Labour?”
He stated that the NLC ought to have taken the bull by the horns and let the TUC know that accommodating members of splinter groups was inappropriate.
He expressed satisfaction with the NUT in Osun State which, he said, was one of the most vibrant in the country.
He commended teachers in the state for discharging their duties with utmost dedication despite the fact that most of them were being paid half salaries since July 2015.
He urged them to work harder while expressing the hope that the situation would soon change as things became better.
The Chairman of the NUT in the state, Mr. Wakeel Amudah, told the president that Governor Rauf Aregbesola had promised to pay the salary arrears.
He stated that there was no ASUSS in the state, saying the only person that took the NUT to court had lost the legal battle.
