The Ijiegbai of Ekperi in Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo State, His Royal Highness, Deke Yakubu Kanoba, has raised the alarm over the perceived presence of the fleeing Boko Haram members in his kingdom.

Kanoba, who raised the alarm at a meeting of eminent persons with the Commissioner of Police, Haliru Gwandu, alleged that the men, who were armed with AK47 rifles, had been operating in the forest for the past three months.

He lamented that his subjects might not participate in this year’s farming season due to the presence of the suspected insurgents in his locality.

Also speaking, a resident from the area, Chief Moses Akpamuka, said the forest covered over 20 miles and could be new criminal hideout.

Akpamuka said, “They (fleeing insurgents) boasted that they were Boko Haram members. They kidnap people and we are made to pay ransom.”

The police Commissioner said the police authorities were not magicians to know about the armed men activities if no intelligence was received.

He however assured the residents that operatives would be deployed in the area to flush out the armed group.

Gwandu also noted that the conflict between Fulani herdsmen and natives in the state could be solved with the involvement of traditional rulers.

He added, “It has become imperative that, in discharging our duties, the police must, of a necessity, partner and collaborate with the society to ensure the common good for all.”
