Lagos State wrestling coach, Rasaq Kazeem, has said the state wrestlers are ready to win the National Wrestling Championships in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, from March 8 to 13.
The competition, which will serve as a trial for the national teams, will see wrestlers compete in 10 weight categories each in the men’s freestyle, Greco-roman and female wrestling. The competition will also feature junior wrestlers competing for honours in various weight categories.
More than 300 wrestlers from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory are expected to participate in the tournament. Wrestling clubs in the country are also expected to feature in the five-day competition.
Kazeem said the wrestlers have begun training for the competition and were ready to stop the wrestlers from other states.
“We have been training since January and the wrestlers are raring to go. The task ahead of us is to bring back a medal in each of the weight categories we are competing in,” he said.
“We will have a mini-trial to decide the best wrestlers we are going with to Bayelsa. The wrestlers want to make the national teams as well so it is enough motivation for them. We have lost some wrestlers to other states while some others have left for other reasons but we have capable replacements for them in the team.
“Wrestling is one of the sports that Lagos is known to be good at, hence we will be going to the championships to bring back medals.”
