The 2017 season of the Hoops Dream Basketball Programme will officially begin on Saturday at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Ibadan.

The programme, which is in its second edition, is a basketball development programme combining the coaching of the game with educational mentoring and support.

Organiser of the event, Damola Awosika, said the programme is aimed at discovering basketball players for Oyo State.

“Hoops Dream is a programme that aims to develop basketball in Oyo State. It is aimed at introducing basketball to pupils between the age of five and 18,” he said.

“The programme runs from January to September every year and after the success of the first edition, we decided to bring it back this year. It is an out-of-school programme which runs on Fridays and Saturdays. This year’s edition started in January and we have a good number of pupils taking part in it.

“We are formally opening it on Saturday and we hope to attract more pupils. The coaches who teach the kids are from the Oyo State Basketball Association as well as some other private coaches, who showed interest in what we are doing.”

Awosika said the highlight of the event would be a mini tournament to test the skills of the participants at the end of the season in September.
