Unknown gunmen have killed the Chief Imam of Egbeta mosque in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
It was learnt that the cleric, identified as Mallam Saka Afolabi, was on his way to the mosque when he was trailed by three men, suspected to be assassins, and shot him dead.
He was said to have been shot at a close range, in the presence of two of his sons.
One of his sons, Mutiu, explained that the assailants came on a motorcycle last Saturday night and identified his father before killing him.
He said, “We were going to the mosque when three boys came on a motorcycle. One said, ‘This is the man.’ They pointed a flashlight at our faces and shot my father.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Nkombe, confirmed the incident on Monday.
Nkombe said that those identified in the murder would be invited to the police command for questioning.
He noted that while investigation had commenced, personnel of the homicide department had been directed to apprehend the killers.
