OWERRI— Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Chief Acho Ihim, has described federal roads in the state as “pitiable death traps, begging for urgent attention.”

Chief Ihim said this, yesterday, when he visited the Mechanic Village, Okigwe, which was razed by fire, following an accident involving a fuel tanker.

“The condition of federal roads in Imo State is pitiable. They are death traps begging for urgent attention. The total neglect of these roads is unwarranted,” Ihim said.

He lamented what he called “the colossal damage” as well as the financial loss inflicted on the citizenry, Okigwe local government and the state. The economic loss caused by the inferno to the local and state governments is colossal.”

After taking a swipe at the past federal and state governments for neglecting the state, the speaker appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to “address the prevailing painful neglect.”

While calling on drivers to drive with caution, he, however, reasoned that the accident could have been avoided if the driver was not reckless and appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, to come to the aid of the victims.

“I appeal to the Federal Government to compel the contracting firm handling the repair work on the Enugu-Okigwe-Umuahia-Aba-Port Harcourt dual carriageway to expedite action and save Nigerians from untimely and preventable deaths,” Ihim said.

It will be recalled that the driver ran into a crater on the road, lost control of the fully laden tanker truck, which tumbled and burst into flames.

The fire razed a large part of the expansive Mechanic and Allied Trades Workers Village.
