Workers in Ekiti State on Wednesday shut their offices to celebrate the 2017 International Women’s Day with Governor Ayodele Fayose in Ado Ekiti.
The state government had declared Wednesday a public holiday for women in the state to troop out to the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium to celebrate.
At the event, the governor announced a N500m empowerment fund for 1,000 women.
He also said the ongoing litigation over leadership crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party would not affect the party in the 2018 governorship election in Ekiti.
Fayose again hinted at the prospect of moving out of the party if Senator Ali Modu Sheriff won at the Supreme Court.
‘We are not with Sheriff and we will never be with Sheriff. After the judgment at the Supreme Court, we will chart a way forward.
“Don’t despair, you have a leader sent by God who would go beyond Ekiti to conquer in Nigeria,” he said.
The governor flayed the police and the Department of State Services for allegedly allowing themselves to be used by the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government.
“Let them come and carry their APC police and DSS. I have the people as my local police. Come and carry your APC materials,” he said.
Fayose announced the promotion of a woman Executive Director, Mrs. Adewole to a Permanent Secretary in the civil service and also empowered a female musician popularly called Bukky with N2m to purchase instruments with a pledge to appoint more women.
The main bowl of the stadium was filled to capacity with women drawn from all the 16 local governments appearing in attire with the portrait of the governor.
Promising to liberate women from all forms of oppression, Fayose added, “Very soon, I will empower women engaging in petty trading and other businesses with a sum of N500m. I will also want to give financial assistance to 1,000 women apart from the sum of N200m I want to give to 200 women in farming.”
A Niger Delta woman activist, Mrs. Ankio Briggs, advocated the restructuring of Nigeria, saying it would help to champion the course of womenfolk and bring about equitable and stable Nigeria.
The wife of the governor, Mrs. Feyidetan Fayose, appealed to women to be good and supportive wives, promising to use her office to bring succour to Ekiti women.
