British doctors who performed a surgery on a woman thinking she had cancer were shocked to discover she had a stunning pile of stones instead, The Sun reports.

According to the UK tabloid, 60-year-old Pushpa Devi had a CT scan after experiencing severe pains and fevers for almost a year.

When the scan showed a mass near her gallbladder, surgeons thought she had cancer.

However, when doctors performed a surgery to remove the mass at Fortis Hospital in Delhi, they were shocked to find gallstones instead; 838 of them.

While Devi would have been relieved to avoid cancer, her situation was delicate.

“The patient’s situation was such that it required removing of a part of the liver along with the gallbladder. The case was very complicated, but our team managed to pull it off with ease,” the lead surgeon, Dr Amit Javed, was quoted as saying.

Devi’s 838 ‘stones’ also missed out on the record for the highest number of gallstones. A 49-year-old had 12,000 stones removed from his gallbladder in 2016, according to the report.
