LAGOS—THE Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘A’ Ikeja, Lagos has said it made N1.3 billion seizures of contraband goods in the months of January and February 2017 having deepened its anti-smuggling operations.
A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the unit, Jerry Attah, said that a breakdown showed that the unit intercepted various contrabands with a duty paid value (DPV) of N713,838,950.00.
He also said the unit through its interventions recovered N650,314,436.90 from duty payments and demand notices on general goods that tried to beat the system from seaports, airport and border stations.
According to him, the goods were seized for false declaration, transfer of value, and short change in duty payment that are meant for the Federal Government of Nigeria.
According to him, Controller, Federal Operations Unit ‘A’, Comptroller Haruna Mamudu thanked the Comptroller General of Customs Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (retd) for recognizing the unit’s hard work, even as he commended the officers and men of the Unit for living up to their statutory responsibilities in suppression of smuggling, blocking all revenue leakages and enhancing trade facilitation towards sustaining best international standards.
His words: “In the months under review, 197 different seizures were recorded comprising foreign parboiled rice, frozen poultry products, vegetable oil, smuggled vehicles, Indian hemp, arms, fake pharmaceutical and medicament and various general merchandise”
