The Ogun State Council of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture has called for probe of the killing of a commercial driver by men of Nigeria Customs Service in the state.
Rising from the meeting of the council of five city chambers which consist of Abeokuta, Ota, Yewa, Remo and Ijebu chambers, held in Abeokuta, President of OgunCCIMA, Mrs. Adeola Adebutu said the chambers have condemn the action, describing it as illegal.
Customs officers have reportedly killed a commercial driver identified as Saubana Onila
along Kobape-Siun-Sagamu expressway in Abeokuta on Wednesday while chasing suspected smugglers of bags of rice.
Adebutu while addressing newsmen after the meeting, said it would join the State government to demand for details and transparent investigation into the killing of the driver.
The state government had condemned the activities of the men of NCS in the state, demanding for probe of the incident.
While reacting to the activities of the men of NCS in the state, the Chambers said it does not support any form of economic sabotage, but, it condemns what it called reckless act by men of the NCS .
Adebutu who also reacted to the invasion of shops of rice sellers in Sango/Ota few weeks ago and the seizure of some materials from Adire/Kampala traders in Abeokuta recently, described the action as robbery, saying, the action of the Men of NCS could not have been legal.
She said, OgunCCIMA believes that, there would have been no need for this reckless act y men of the NCS if they had executed enough patriotism at the border posts and prevented the importation of smuggled goods.
“More so, there was a government policy that stipulates that he operation of the Customs Service must not be beyond 40 km from the border posts and this Kobape is more than 40 km.
“As the Ogun state government has demanded detailed and transparent investigation into this ugly incident, OgunCCIMA joins the State government to appeal to the people to remain calm as it continues to engage everyone concern to prevent a recurrence”, she said.
