An Edo State Magistrate’s Court presided over by Mrs. I. U. Iyoha has sentenced two men to six months’ imprisonment each for vandalising a transformer along Oko Central Road, Benin City, Edo State.

The convicts are 25-year-old John Joshua and Yakubu Idris, 28.

The Benin Electricity Distribution Company, which said this in a statement on Sunday, noted that the convicts were arraigned by the police before the magistrate on two counts of “malicious damage and stealing.”

According to the BEDC, Joshua and Idris were caught in the act by members of the Idahagbon community at the Oko Central area of Benin.

Their arraignment in court, the statement said, followed a thorough investigation of the case by the police.

The convicts, who were arraigned on a two-count marked MOR/133C/17, on February 27, 2017, pleaded guilty to the charges.

They were subsequently convicted by the magistrate and sentenced to a prison term of six months each.

The court, however, gave them an option of paying a fine of N70,000, instead of going to jail.
