Some unidentified gunmen have killed the Chief Imam of Egbeta Mosque in the Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.

It was learnt that the cleric, identified as Mallam Saka Afolabi, was on his way to the mosque when he was confronted by three men, suspected to be assassins, who shot him dead.

He was said to have been shot at a close range in the presence of two of his sons.

One of his sons, Mutiu, explained that the assailants came on a motorcycle on Saturday and identified his father before killing him.

He said, “We were going to the mosque when three boys came on a motorcycle. One said, ‘This is the man. They shone a torch at our faces and shot my father.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Nkombe, confirmed the incident on Monday.

Nkombe said those identified in the murder would be invited to the police command for questioning.

He said while investigation had commenced, personnel of the homicide department had been directed by the state police commissioner to apprehend the killers.
