APC govs meet on party affairs today

    John Alechenu, Abuja

Barring any last minute change, all the 24 governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress will meet on Thursday (today) at the party’s National Secretariat to deliberate on the crisis rocking the party.

It was learnt that the meeting was summoned at the instance of party leaders to harmonise positions ahead of the forthcoming non-elective bi-annual convention.

Although, the agenda of the meeting has yet to be made public, it has been gathered that issues to be discussed include the state of the party, especially its poor financial standing and the crisis in some state chapters.

It is also expected that party leaders who have had the privilege of visiting President Muhammadu Buhari will brief the governors and the NWC members on their visits.

It was further gathered that the party’s NWC was seeking to leverage on the meeting to secure the support of governors to ensure that the coming convention would be “non-elective.”

Some highly-placed members of the party are concerned that some of the governors working in tandem with some party leaders may want to use the convention to carry out a cleansing of the party leadership.

A highly-placed member of the party, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that “some of us especially those in the NWC are not particularly pleased that we knew next to nothing about visits to our dear President in London.”

Speaking on the crisis within the party, the party source said, “We also know that some governors are not happy with their state representatives in the NWC and they may want to make the convention an elective one so that they can have such people replaced. We will be looking at all these issues.”

When contacted, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, confirmed plans to hold the meeting but said, “The meeting is just a consultative one ahead of our national convention.”
