Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has said the state will make use of the drones made by the Lagos State Polytechnic for aerial security surveillance in the state.
Ambode, who spoke on Thursday at the 25th convocation of the institution at the main campus in Ikorodu, commended the staff and students for being innovative, saying the government would fund the drone project.
The governor said LASPOTECH, in its 40 years of existence, had occupied a pride of place among state-owned polytechnics in Nigeria, adding that conscious efforts must be made to build on the success by turning the institution into a true centre of excellence in technological education.
He said, “The Lagos State Polytechnic must rise to the challenge of meeting the technical manpower requirement of both the public and private sectors in not just Lagos State, but in the whole nation.
“We must rise from providing education for the sake of acquiring a certificate to providing knowledge which will empower our youths to become champions of their generation and establish enterprises that will create jobs and generate wealth.”
Ambode advised the graduating students to be good ambassadors of the polytechnic and the state.
Earlier, LASPOTECH Rector, Mr. Samuel Sogunro, said Ambode was the first governor to participate in the convocation of the institution in the last 27 years, adding that the governor had approved an increment in the monthly subvention to the institution from N153.731m to N210m.
A total of 9,228 students graduated from 32 departments, out of which 273 came out with distinctions.
The overall best graduating student, Abdulazeez Ejire, from the School of Pure and Applied Science, was offered immediate employment.
