The Adamawa State Government has said it recorded eight child sexual violence cases in the state in 2016.

The Director, Child Development, state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Yakubu Tiki, on Saturday, told journalists in Yola that it had also secured the conviction of two suspects by the state High Court.

Tiki said, “Last year, we received eight cases of child sexual violence in the state and two of the suspects were convicted. These cases were reported to us by our partners and after proper investigation, the ministry filed the cases in court.”

She said the ministry, in collaboration with various national and international non-governmental organisations, was working to ensure that child rights were protected.

According to the director, the ministry is increasing awareness to protect children against all sorts of abuses.

“The ministry partnered with other key ministries, departments and agencies in the state, including the health and education ministries and security agencies, to assist the affected children and their families against stigma and health-related issues.

“Protection against  child abuse is a collective responsibility, hence the need for all stakeholders to join hands for a successful implementation of the Child Rights Act,” Tiki said.

She added that the ministry had opened child development offices in all the 21 local government areas in the state, while calling on communities to report any child abuse case in their locality for necessary action.
